Australian Open 2010 - Women's draw

What a tournament this year!!! Well in the women's draw there was no big surprise except for the return of Justine Henin. As usual Sharapova exited in the first round. There was no surprise when Ana Ivanovic exited in the third round. When Jelena Jankovic exited there was no commotion. The big mom, Kim Clijsters who clinched the US Open 2009 didnt survive the 3rd round. She was stopped by Nadia Petrova.

When William sisters and Dinara Safina were progressing there were three players (Justine Henin, Li Na, Jie Zheng) who silently progressed. In the 4th round Dinara Safina was forced to quit due to injury. This was unexpected coz she was yet to clinch her first title. I expected her to be in the final with Serena to avenge her revenge. But unfortuante for the underdog. She have to wait for some more time to add title to her card.

With both Williams on the same slot only one of them was expected to be in the finals. Last year they met in the semi-finals but this year the draw was in such a way that they wud be meeting in the quarters itself. So I was waiting for the grand quarter finals between the william sisters. But the chinese player Li Na booked her place in the quarters beating the elder of the William's sisters. It was quiet amazing. The match was getting hot with two non seeded players and also two chinese player for the first time in the history of the Australian Open. Everything was getting hot on heels. The chinese players didnt survive the semis.

The finals was between the former world no 1. Justin Henin and current world no 1. Serena Williams. I badly wanted Justine to hold the championship trophy in her hands. The first set was in the hands of Serena. I thought that the belgian would not survive another set. But she stunned the world by clinching the second set. So the match was pushed to the deciding set. Serena was aggressive and Justine was no match to her. She finished the set in just over 30 minutes.

By winning this match Serena equalled her spot with Billie Jean King for securing 12 Grand Slam Singles titles. When Margaret Court handed Serena her trophy there was so much glee in Serena's face. The belgian has made a good come back and soon we can find real tennis.

With Justine back, Kim in good form, William sisters hot on heels and Chinese players with their ticket I think the french open would be great to watch.
